The Diet That Rebuilt People's Gut Bacteria in Ten Weeks
Ask almost anyone how to look after your gut and the answer comes back the same: eat more fibre. So when Stanford researchers ran a head-to-head trial to see which diet actually improves the gut microbiome, fibre was the heavy favourite. It lost, and the food that beat it was the one most people never think about.
Most nutrition advice comes from observational studies, which are notoriously messy. People who eat plenty of fibre tend to be healthier overall, but they also tend to exercise more, smoke less, and earn more. That makes it hard to tell whether the fibre is doing the work or just keeping good company.
So the Stanford team ran a proper randomized trial. They split 36 healthy adults into two groups for ten weeks. One ate fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, fermented cottage cheese, vegetable brine drinks, and kombucha. The other raised their fibre through legumes, seeds, whole grains, nuts, fruit, and vegetables. Blood and stool samples tracked the changes throughout.
The fibre group's diversity stayed completely flat, and their stool was high in leftover, undigested carbohydrate, a sign their existing bacteria simply lacked the tools to break the sudden influx down.
The fermented food group was a different story. Their diversity climbed steadily, and rose further the more fermented food they ate. Four types of immune cell grew less reactive, and 19 inflammatory proteins in the blood fell across the group. One of them, interleukin 6, is tied to type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic stress. In the fibre group, not one of those 19 markers moved.
The reason comes down to how each food meets the gut. Fibre feeds the bacteria you already have, so if the right microbes are not there to eat it, adding more does little. Fermented foods instead deliver live microbes directly, bringing in new workers rather than feeding a workforce that is not there.
Two caveats are worth holding onto. This was small, and only ten weeks long. A longer trial might give the gut time to adapt to the extra fibre, and fibre remains essential for plenty of other reasons. But for a fast, measurable gain in diversity and a drop in inflammation, fermented foods are what moved the needle.
The Protocol
Eat fermented foods every day. Work up to around six small servings over time so your stomach adapts.
Buy live, unpasteurized products. Stick to yogurt, kefir, raw kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, or brine drinks. Make sure the label says "live" or "raw."
Don't drop the fibre. Keep eating fibre for long term health, but rely on fermented foods for fast gut diversity and lower inflammation.
Give it ten weeks. That is how long it took in the study to see real drops in inflammation and big increases in good bacteria.

"Gum stays in your stomach for 7 years "
The short answer is no, not even close. To prove it, an experiment mimicked the inside of your stomach using warm water, mild acid, digestive enzymes, and a steady churning motion.
Your stomach uses two main tricks to break down food: physical churning and chemical breakdown. When tested, hard-shell pellet gum almost completely dissolved in less than an hour. Softer strip gum took longer because it uses a synthetic gum base that digestive enzymes struggle to break down.
Even if your body can’t chemically digest that rubbery base, it doesn't just sit in your stomach for seven years. Your digestive system simply pushes it along, and it passes out as waste just like any other indigestible material.

The Longevity Marker Hiding in Your Hands
We track blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight without thinking. Yet one of the best predictors of how long you will live almost never gets checked: your grip strength.
Grip is a quick proxy for overall muscle strength, which heavily influences how long you stay healthy. The catch is that strength fades quietly. It peaks early, holds steady, then drops. Without pain or visible changes, most people never notice the loss until a fall or frailty makes it obvious.
The data is clear. Studies covering millions of people show that every 5 kilogram drop in grip strength correlates to roughly a 16% higher risk of death. Better yet, older adults who improved their grip strength cut their mortality risk by about 31%, regardless of their starting point.
You can build strength at any age. Simple resistance training twice a week using weights, bands, or bodyweight moves does the job. Carrying heavy loads, hanging from a bar, or holding shopping bags will build your grip. You do not need a gym, just consistent effort.
